Whales and Dolphins
Over one million people visit Tenerife each year to observe these magnificent creatures, making it the top whale-watching destination worldwide.
To date, a total of 27 species of Cetacean (whales, dolphins and porpoises) have been spotted on our Freebird Sailing catamaran excursions. This figure accounts for over a third of all whale and dolphin species in the world and some of the most rare that have been seen include Blue, Sperm, Beaked and Fin Whales and Common and Atlantic Spotted Dolphins residing in the waters of the coast of Tenerife, which are frequently observed. The most predominantly viewed species is the Shortfinned Pilot Whale. Luckily for our guests, these are nocturnal hunters, preferring to relax and sleep during the day, making the chance of seeing them about 99.9% With most whale species already endangered or in decline, it is extremely fortunate that the regional government has declared all Cetacean species in Canarian waters protected. Special observational permits are granted to professional organisations such as ours and, of course, all whale hunting is prohibited.
With our expert guides and crew members on board, it is our aim for guests to enjoy sightings of these incredible mammals and hopefully raise awareness as to the plight of these gentle giants of the sea.
